There is also a rise in the local elderly population who live on social security and find themselves having to choose whether to buy groceries or pay for medical care and medications.East Stokes Outreach partners with Second Harvest Food Bank in Winston-Salem and is able to purchase food at a deep discount of .19 per pound. Their network of partner programs offer a critical source of nutritional support. Local grocery stores, Ingles and Food Lion in Walnut Cove, contribute meat, deli, breads and desserts, which is picked up by volunteers five to seven days a week.
